Today would have been my father’s birthday—John “Tim” Phelan, a fierce and respected labor leader who led Operating Engineers Local 399. He was known for his loyalty, tenacity, and relentless pursuit of better contracts for workers across Illinois. He taught me the basics—negotiating, adapting, and never backing down, whether in business or life.

He was often quoted as the first person you’d want as a friend and the last you’d want as an enemy. Those lessons shape my fight today—flipping the script like the “rabbit with the gun.”

Happy Birthday, Dad. Your legacy drives me forward every day.
