illinois cannabis

In a recent article by John Pletz, Crain's Chicago Business, State of Illinois reported its first cannabis sales decline since legalization. Interestingly, Pletz previously spoke with Juan Finch Jr. back in March 2024, but never followed up. Makes you wonder what changed.

Laura Jaramillo Bernal, the COO of nuEra Cannabis, recently spoke at the Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference about ‘growth strategies.’ However, following this revenue slump, her focus has shifted to “price compression” and “cross-border competition.” I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure nuEra operates in both Illinois and the State of Michigan with multiple licenses and two properties there... Just some public knowledge, since the contracts are part of the lawsuit. This narrative feels similar to tactics used by companies like MedMen and Trulieve, which have cited external pressures to manage investor expectations when projections aren’t met. Is this an attempt to manage material matters under U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission scrutiny, framing the decline as temporary?

From my perspective, this looks like an effort to shift the blame from internal missteps to external factors, maintaining investor confidence while justifying missed targets. I’m not making any factual claims—just sharing my personal opinion on what appears to be happening here. As always, I welcome discussion and debate.

Could this be more about strategic messaging than genuine challenges? Just my take. More to come as I continue to dig deeper.
