black market
The persistence of the black market in cannabis isn’t an accident—it’s a consequence of ownership dynamics and regulatory favoritism. Large corporations squeeze out deserving local operators, and when they misstep, regulators and the government respond with mere slaps on the wrist, offering fines to show the public they’re “doing something” without ever truly impacting corporate profits. Just recently, Ascend Wellness and Curaleaf were fined $165,000 by Massachusetts authorities for safety violations and product mismanagement—not even a dent in their overall operations.
Meanwhile, California’s legal market continues to struggle against unlicensed competition because systemic barriers prevent legitimate ownership opportunities for those at the grassroots level. The upcoming DEA rescheduling of cannabis could solidify corporate control, leaving communities further marginalized as these companies grow unchecked.
If we don’t act now, these corporations will cement their grip on the market, continuing to marginalize local businesses and community-based entrepreneurs. We need more voices shouting “Support your local weed dealer” to spread the truth and uplift communities that have been excluded from this industry. Every voice matters.
That’s exactly what we explore on the F’nAround Podcast—the issues corporate cannabis tries to hide or bury. I’m using my personal experiences at nuEra Cannabis to shine a light on these problems. By pulling back the curtain on just one company, we aim to push for change in the broader industry. Change starts with knowledge—and it starts with us.

Craft cares, corporate doesn’t.
Speak your truth.
